Brac is the largest among the central Dalmatian islands, and also the highest among Adriatic island with 778 meters. Symbol of the island is Zlatni rat in Bol, on the island’s south side – one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire Adriatic. However, it is not only a place of exceptional beauty, but also full of traditions and secrets that will make your vacation complete. Brac island historical heritage and a vital folk culture provide a perfect setting for a vacation filled with unforgettable experiences.
Brac is well connected to the mainland by ferry lines from Split and Makarska. Ferry ports on the island are located in Supetar and Sumartin. During the summer season, ferries on the line Split – Supetar drive during the day almost every hour, and the ride takes no more than 50 minutes. Ferry line between Makarska and Sumartin is slightly shorter and cheaper, recommended for guests who intend to spend holidays on the east side of the island. There is an airport on Brac, located 14 km from Bol and 32 km from Supetar. It is open only during the summer season. Island’s main road leading from Supetar reach most parts of the island.
Brac quarries are the symbol of the island. from there stone is taken out since the time of Roman rule until today. The stone from Brac is known for its quality and whiteness, and it was used to built some of the most important buildings, including the Cathedral in Sibenik. The two stone-masonry schools and one art colony in the Lower Humac and Pucisca offer programs teaching and training techniques stonemason, under the guidance of qualified mentors.
The interior of the island today are engaged in cooperative cattle breeding and production of various products from sheep meat and milk. Brac is the most famous for specialty vitalac which consists of sheep intestines prepared on an open fire. Among the wines that are produced on the island, Bolski Plavac has a special place.
During the summer months in most places on Brac there are folk festivals and other cultural events. Inhabitants of Brac all gather in a procession celebrating St. Vid on Vidova Gora. Among the most interesting events on the island is “Bez regula” (without rules) held at the end of July in Sutivan. The event includes extreme sports competitions, informative lectures, promotions, equipment, courses, a festival of documentary films about sports. Everything is spiced with rich nightlife with music concerts.
Sutivan, a village and harbor in the extreme west of the northern coast of the island of Brac, 7 km west of Supetar; population 641. Chief occupations are farming, wine production, olive growing, fishing and tourism.
A park with a palm alley is situated at the end of the Sutivan cove, on the former moorland. The coastal strip along the village has been forested (Aleppo and star pines). A local road connects Sutivan with all settlements on the island. Smaller yachts can berth in the port; large vessels anchor in front of the port. The vicinity of Split and beautiful, mostly pebble beaches make Sutivan a popular weekend resort for the inhabitants of Split and visitors from other places. The Livka cove has a sand beach. The coastal region around Cape Gomilica is suitable for underwater fishing.
